Addis Guzo reloaded!
The seventh year itch of Addis Guzo brings us the big change. In the near future we will move with our project to a new location in Addis Ababa. The conversion work on the new site is ongoing.
Three years of uncertainty are over. Now we move and look forward to the new place. It is very centrally located near the big market (Mercato).
Three reasons helped us to overcome this difficult time:
1. Our employees in Addis Ababa, who under difficult circumstances continued the project activities and made it possible for many people with disabilities to find new perspectives.
2. Our new Country Director, Tamirat Belay, who jumped with great energy and initiative into the gap that Teferi Kassa left behind.
3. The great and loyal, idealistic and financial support from Switzerland. For example, the Symphasis Foundation has assured us that we will be responsible for a large part of the renovation and removal costs. Thank you very much!
Even with difficult conversations always he is always there and right in the middle: Tamirat (right in the picture) in a meeting with the Tailor Group.
The new location is being revised and renovated. Slowly the charm of the compound is becoming visible. We look forward to move into the new home of Addis Guzo.
Already broadly renovated: the smaller building complex, the former clinic, which we call Bottlebrush because of the beautiful bottlebrush tree in the middle of the compound. Here the offices are located and he is therefore this compound will be the head office of the new site.
The larger part of the compound is still under construction. The area in the middle of the picture (back) will be the centerpiece, the new sports field for our wheelchair basketball teams.
Diligent hands at work: The spacious rooms will be renovated for future activities.
The kidney of the new project: The waste water tank is being built.
And of course, nothing works without a properly filled stomach: This is how the Addis Guzo kitchen of the future should look like.
Also we will have our souls be taken care of: in this area a recreation area with green area and playground will be created...
. . . and ohter News from Addis Guzo
Soon there will be an Addis Guzo Contemporary Dance Group for people with disabilities. With great commitment Alexandra Huber, our external consultant, initiated this new activity. Thank you very much!
Our IGA groups (Income Generating Activities) are doing well. Their products are sold at local bazaars and markets. Increasingly, however, they also receive orders from outside of Ethiopia.
The Swiss Organization Caritas has ordered 100 Muslim hand puppets from Haya Dolls for a Handwash project.
The Tailor Group sews inserts for a simple water filter system, an idea of Desert Rose Consulting in Ethiopia.
The candle group has been producing candles for the "Shoa" supermarket chain for some time now.
Also the pottery group has received first small orders.
We also sell handcraft product from our IGA groups in Switzerland and Germany. For example, these crochet animals from our group Chuchura, an absolute bestseller.
In the summer, Daniel Hunn, the Swiss ambassador and Marc De Santis from SDC have honoured us with a visit. We sincerely thank you for your great interest and financial support from the SDC.

In addition to the support of SDC, we are also pleased to receive donations from the US Embassy and the Diplomatic Spouses Project Matrix Group in Ethiopia. We also send a big thank you to all our donors in Switzerland. Various foundations have been with us for several years, enabling us to work continuously.
Our physiotherapists, Misile and Bayisa, wish for new inputs from Switzerland. Especially for the work in our rehabilitation daycare center for families with disabled children, we are looking for occupational or physiotherapists who would like to volunteer in Addis Ababa. Interested persons are welcome to contact us.
Overall a good mood during therapy
For almost a year, teenagers and young adults have been repairing the wheelchairs for Addis Guzo in the rollaid workshop in Interlaken. At the beginning of November, the fifth container will travel to Addis Ababa. The cooperation between the partner organizations Qualifutura, Verein Signum vitae, Verein rollaid and Addis Guzo is a pleasure and has been working smoothly since the beginning.
